<image:title>Blog - Understanding the Mental Health Impact of Domestic Violence: A Guide for Clinicians - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Domestic violence is one of the most pervasive public health crises in the United States, yet it remains one of the most underdiagnosed and undertreated issues in clinical settings. According to the CDC's 2023/2024 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, more than 1 in 3 women (nearly 43.5 million) and more than 1 in 6 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Every minute, an estimated 20 people in the United States are physically abused by an intimate partner — a staggering figure that underscores the urgent need for trauma-informed clinical care. As mental health clinicians, we are uniquely positioned to identify, diagnose, and treat the deep psychological wounds left by domestic violence (DV). This article draws from clinical training on treating DV survivors to walk through the most important considerations: differential diagnosis, the neurological impact of trauma, suicide risk, and evidence-based treatment approaches.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Strangulation in Domestic Violence: What Clinicians, Advocates, and Survivors Need to Know - This distinction carries profound legal consequences. Strangulation can be criminally prosecuted; choking cannot. When a survivor, witness, or even a law enforcement officer uses the word "choking" to describe what was actually strangulation, a defense attorney may exploit that language to undermine the case. Clinicians and advocates should use precise language — and gently help survivors adopt it as well. “She was strangled.” “He strangled her.” “She was placed in a stranglehold.” The words we choose can affect whether an abuser faces accountability (Glenn, 2020).</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Strangulation in Domestic Violence: What Clinicians, Advocates, and Survivors Need to Know - Voice and swallowing changes: A raspy or hoarse voice, difficulty or pain when swallowing, nausea, drooling, or complete loss of voice may indicate damage to the neck muscles, Broca's and Wernicke's areas, the medulla oblongata, and the temporal lobe. Hearing and breathing changes: Ringing, buzzing, pressure, or loss of hearing may signal damage to the temporal lobe and auditory cortex. Difficulty breathing or hyperventilation may reflect damage to the brainstem, including the medulla oblongata and pons.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Strangulation in Domestic Violence: What Clinicians, Advocates, and Survivors Need to Know - Strangulation is not a minor incident that happened to leave no mark. It is one of the most terrifying, physically dangerous, and lethality-predictive events that can occur in a domestic violence relationship. When a survivor discloses that their partner "choked" them, the response from clinicians and advocates must be immediate, trauma-informed, and medically informed. Ask specific follow-up questions. Use accurate language. Encourage medical evaluation. Document thoroughly. And understand that the person in front of you may be carrying neurological damage they are not even aware of.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - When Your Brain Won’t Cooperate: Understanding Executive Dysfunction, Demand Avoidance, and How DBT Can Help - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>You know exactly what you need to do. You’ve known for hours. Maybe days. The task sits there — an email, a form, a phone call, a shower — and yet something invisible seems to stand between you and doing it. It isn’t laziness. It isn’t a lack of caring. For many people, this experience has a name: executive dysfunction. And for a significant subset, it’s tangled up with something called demand avoidance — an intense, often automatic resistance to expectations, even ones the person has set for themselves. Both experiences are frequently misunderstood, under-discussed, and exhausting to live with. But there is good news: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers a set of practical, evidence-based tools that can meaningfully support people navigating these challenges.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan in the late 1980s, was designed precisely for moments like these. Originally created for individuals with borderline personality disorder, DBT has since been validated across a wide range of mental health conditions and is now widely recognized as one of the most effective treatments for emotional dysregulation (Linehan, 1993; Kliem et al., 2010). Its skills aren’t just for therapy offices — they’re built for real moments, in real time, when your nervous system is already on fire. Here’s how to use DBT skills to stop a spiral while you’re in the middle of one.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Addiction and Harm Reduction Among Survivors of Domestic Violence: What Advocates Need to Know - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>When a domestic violence survivor walks through the door of a shelter, a treatment program, or an advocate's office, they may be carrying far more than a bag of belongings. They may be carrying years of trauma, fractured coping strategies, and — in many cases — an addiction that developed not out of weakness or poor choices, but out of survival. Understanding the deeply intertwined relationship between domestic violence and substance use is not just clinically important. It is an act of compassion that every advocate, counselor, and support professional working in this space must embrace. The numbers are difficult to ignore. Research shows that domestic violence survivors are 15 times more likely to abuse alcohol and 9 times more likely to abuse drugs compared to those who have not experienced intimate partner violence (Clarity Chi, 2025). Alcohol alone is a factor in approximately 40% of domestic violence cases in the United States (Recovery Centers of America, 2024). For advocates and clinicians, the question is rarely "why does this person use?" — it is "what were they trying to survive?"</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 50+ Somatic Hacks for Calming and Resetting the Nervous System - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Somatic techniques in therapy are body-based practices that help people regulate emotions, process stress, and restore a sense of safety by working through the nervous system rather than relying only on thoughts or insight. These approaches recognize that stress and trauma are not stored only as memories, but also as physical patterns—such as muscle tension, breath holding, shutdown, or reactivity. By paying attention to sensations, movement, breath, and rhythm in the present moment, somatic techniques help clients access regulation and relief in ways that talking alone sometimes cannot. These techniques work by influencing the autonomic nervous system, which has two main branches: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic system is responsible for fight-or-flight responses, increasing heart rate, muscle tension, and alertness during perceived danger. The parasympathetic system supports rest, digestion, and recovery, helping the body slow down once danger has passed. Many mental health symptoms occur when the nervous system becomes stuck in high activation (anxiety, panic, irritability) or low activation (numbness, collapse, depression). Somatic techniques—such as slow breathing, grounding, gentle movement, or deep pressure—help shift the body out of these extremes and back toward balance.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “Grey Rock” Strategies for High-Conflict Co-Parenting: Mastering the “Grey Rock” Technique (Part 1 - The Basics) - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>When interactions begin to feel overwhelming or emotionally unsafe, reclaiming your power doesn’t require confrontation or explanation. Sometimes, the most effective response is choosing steadiness over reaction and boundaries over engagement. Rather than engaging, explaining, or defending yourself, you become emotionally neutral—uninteresting, unreactive, and intentionally boring. Like a grey rock on the ground, you offer nothing to grab onto. At its core, Grey Rock isn’t about winning arguments or changing someone else’s behavior. It’s about reducing harm. When someone thrives on conflict, control, or emotional reactions, your calm neutrality removes the reward. You respond only when necessary, keep communication brief and factual, and stop offering personal information that can be twisted or used against you. For many people, Grey Rock can be an effective self-protection strategy in high-conflict, psychologically abusive familial or co-parenting situations—especially when the other person seeks control, emotional reactions, or escalation. This strategic emotional neutrality is not about being cold, cruel, or passive. It’s a boundary. One that says: I don’t have to participate in dysfunction to protect myself or meet my goals. Over time, this small shift—from reaction to neutrality—can dramatically reduce stress, escalation, and emotional exhaustion, while reconstructing the communication dynamic over time. In this article, we will cover Grey Rock basics and how we can pair these basics with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy tools to further prepare ourselves to use Grey Rocking in the healthiest, most effective way possible.</image:caption>

The pressure to “take it to the next level” is a blending of instinct and societal expectation. Are you acting on impulse, expectation, or is this something you are really ready for? Deciding on the right time to have sex can be a bit confusing. It can be especially challenging when you're also managing impulse control difficulties such as those with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Deciding when it’s the right time for sexual activity for anyone involves tuning into both your emotional state, your values and goals, rather than just impulses or urges. Here are a few tips to really examine your readiness:</image:caption>
